Carré d'Or map

The prestigious Carré d'Or (or Golden Square if you’re struggling with your high school French) sits ‘squarely’ in the centre of Nice and is an excellent spot from which to base your next holiday on the Côte d’Azur. The architecture is a splendid mix of Bourgeois, Art Deco, Edwardian, Niçois, and Belle Époque (the wonderful Negresco Hotel sits in this ‘quartier’). Consequently your holiday rental apartment in the Carré d'Or will not only be close to everything, but more than likely situated in an elegant, historical building featuring parquet floors, decorative ceilings, and Juliette balconies with ornate wrought iron. And your neighbours will be some of the more affluent Niçois. Naturally haut couture abounds, however because it’s still very much a residential area, so do boulangeries, delicatessens, and neighbourhood bistrots – always an important consideration for your holiday rental apartment.

At the Northern end of the Carré d’Or is the leafy boulevard Victor Hugo lined with grand buildings. At the Southern end is the celebrated Promenade des Anglais where our holiday rental apartments have the added appeal of glorious sea views. In the centre of the Carré d’Or are the pretty streets of rue Longchamp, rue Alphonse Karr, and the ‘zone piétonne’ (a pedestrian section incorporating the boutique and restaurant lined rue Massena and rue de France). For the ‘grand marques’ such as Louis Vuitton, Channel, Bally, Christian Dior, Hermes . . . head to the appropriately named rue Paradis and avenue Verdun where you can give your credit card a serious workout. Naturally, for such a swanky area some of the most prestigious restaurants and hotels are to be found in the Carré d’Or and the Promenade des Anglais. What’s more should you select a holiday apartment to let in this quarter you are likely to have a property which includes the added comforts of air conditioning and lifts - great after a hard day’s shopping!

Within the Carré d’Or is the beautiful Musée Massena used to host important dignitaries but open to the public in between these times; and to the Northwest it’s an easy walk to the splendid Russian Church and the Musée des Beaux Arts. Whilst there may not be a great deal of ‘sights’ in the Carré d’Or, its centrality and elegance makes it such an attractive prospect for our guests wanting a chic base for their holiday rental property. Getting around Nice from the Carré d'Or is simple, as it’s serviced by numerous bus lines, as well as the tram that runs through Place Massena bordering the quarter. Furthermore, both the central Nice-Ville train station and Old Town are an easy 10 minute walk away. And did we mention that the beach is at your doorstep?

  • Quick Walk to the Beach
  • Easy Access to Public Transport
  • Tranquil, Elegant Residential Quarter

The prettily named ‘Quartier de Fleurs’ is a very popular place to live with the locals due to its quiet elegance, easy walking distance to the beach, and quick access to the centre via frequent bus links. For the very same reasons, it has proven equally popular with our Guests, as their choice of location from which to let a holiday apartment. The architecture is a mix of modern and historical, with the roads perpendicular to boulevards Gambetta and Grosso the addresses of some of the finest examples of Bourgeois, Belle Époque, and Art Déco architecture in Nice. All the essentials are close at hand to your holiday rental apartment in the Fleurs: bakeries, supermarkets, wine shops, and more.

The Promenade des Anglais serves as the Southern border, and boulevard Gambetta the Eastern border, which being a main road is an animated area with a number of ‘tabacs’ and cafes. The beaches at this end of Nice have smaller pebbles that are a little gentler on the feet! One of the best private beaches in this part of Nice is Hi Beach which is attached to the funky Hi Hotel located in the Fleurs quarter and therefore an easy stroll from your holiday rental apartment. It’s a great spot for an ‘apero’ or snack with its focus on healthy options, yoga classes, massages, and ambient music in the evenings.

The pretty park ‘Jardin Alsace Lorraine’ borders the Fleurs and is popular with young and old alike. What’s more Bus 98 from the airport stops near boulevards Gambetta and Grosso, which means getting to your holiday rental apartment in the Fleurs is simple. The stunning Russian Orthodox church is located nearby; an unexpected yet beautiful sight set in this quiet residential area. Within close proximity can also be found: the Museum of Fine Arts housed in the former home of a Ukrainian princess; the architecturally unique and innovative for its time Eglise St. Jeanne d’Arc; the Villa Arson, home to resident artists (not arsonists!), an art school and exhibition area; and Parc Phoenix, a lovely landscaped park with a small lake, a winter garden, and the Museum of Asian Arts. A number of our holiday apartments to let in the Fleurs district have balconies with views of private gardens, plus lifts and air conditioning - always welcome at the end of a busy day in the height of summer.

  • Heart of Nice
  • Beautiful Historical Square
  • Lively & Animated
  • Boutiques Galore
  • Cafes, Wine Bars & Bistrots

Massena is a fabulous spot from which to rent a Sunlight Properties holiday apartment. Place Massena, arguably the heart of Nice, is a striking piazza bordered by some fine examples of Genoan architecture painted in watermelon red, mustard yellow and eggshell blue. Dissecting Place Massena is a succession of palm tree filled and wisteria laden parks. The old bus station has been knocked down and this green axis will extend all the way to MAMAC (the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) and the National Theatre. At the Southern end of the square, lies the much photographed Fontaine du Soleil, with its newly erected centerpiece, the well endowed Apollo. One of the best modern art installations in Nice is found here. Rising above the black and white checkerboard paving is a work by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa called ‘Conversation with Nice’ – 7 men sitting on poles. It is quite magical at night when illuminated with changing colours.

Being in the heart of the city means all our holiday apartment to let in Massena are within easy reach of everything. West of Place Massena are the quarters of the Carré d’Or and Musiciens; to the South the beach; and to the East the Old Town . All public transport is at your doorstep: the central train station, bus station, and the tram that actually runs through Place Massena. In winter an ice rink is installed along with a fabulous Christmas market replete with little chalets selling a myriad of artisanal crafts, hot chocolate and mulled wine. There is also a champagne and oyster bar!

The centre has some of the best shopping in Nice with the up-market department store Galerie Lafayette situated on the Northwest corner of Place Massena, and Nice Etoile, another popular department store a little further up avenue Jean Medecin; not to mention funky boutiques and excellent restaurants and wine bars – all a short stroll from your holiday rental apartment. Avenue de Verdun and avenue de Suède are home to some very chic names such as Hermès, Cartier, Longchamp, and Louis Vuitton. Place Massena is also generally where the action is when one of the numerous festivals or events takes place in Nice - such as the Spring Carnival Mardi Gras and Nice Jazz Festival. The Theatre du Verdure on the Albert 1er park near the sea, is the outdoor venue for concerts and shows and only a few minutes walk from your holiday rental apartment in the Massena district.

The other advantage to being based in the Massena area is that most of our holiday rental apartments benefit from lifts and air conditioning and are close to the best supermarket in Nice on avenue Jean Medecin. From a cultural perspective, this quarter is home to the National Theatre of Nice, the Photography Theatre, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

  • Central Location
  • Elegant Historical Architecture
  • Quiet Residential Quarter

Musiciens

The romantically named ‘Musiciens Quartier’ is so called from the myriad of streets named after famous classical composers: Rossini, Mozart, Verdi, Berlioz, Offenbach .

The architecture is equally classical: Bourgeois, Belle Époque, Art Déco, and ‘Grand Palais’ – magnificent buildings with elaborate facades. Many of our holiday rental apartments in the Musiciens benefit from the charming elements that are the hallmark of these splendid buildings: extravagant entrances, ornate decorative ceilings, parquet floors, and French doors leading to petite balconies – perfect for sitting and relaxing with a glass of chilled rosé, perhaps listening to ‘the drinking song’ from La Traviata!

As the Musiciens does not possess an abundance of restaurants and bars it benefits from being quiet and peaceful, yet due to its centrality it’s within a few minutes walk to numerous restaurants and cafes within the neighbouring quarters of the Carré d’Or and Massena. So you are assured of being close to it all but in a peaceful environment when you rent a Sunlight Properties holiday apartment in the Musiciens. As with most French inner city residential areas there are still a number of convenience stores and bakeries nearby so you can nip down and pick up your croissant for breakfast. There is an excellent Monoprix supermarket and the Nice Étoile department store, not to mention back to back shops located on Jean Medecin - perfect for stocking up on both essentials and luxuries. The Promenade des Anglaisand the beach are 10 minutes away by foot, and the Old Town is an easy 15 to 20 minutes walk. The central train station (Nice-Ville) is on the Northern border; avenue Jean Medecin and the tramline sit on the Eastern border (making it easily accessible to your holiday letting apartment); the Carré d’Or is immediately to the South with boulevard Victor Hugo being the dividing line between the two quarters. To the West is the elegant park ‘Alsace Lorraine’ on the corner of boulevards Victor Hugo and Gambetta.

Another advantage to letting a holiday apartment in the Musiciens quarter of Nice is that there are a number of underground car parks: 11 avenue Aubert, (Vinci Park Mozart), rue Paul Deroulede (Nice Étoile Carpark), and 20 boulevard Victor Hugo (Vinci Park Louvre) making parking easy when you rent a Sunlight Properties holiday apartment. In addition, many of our holiday rental properties benefit from lifts and air conditioning. If you want peace and quiet but easy access to it all then the Musiciens is an excellent choice for your holiday apartment letting on the Côte d’Azur.

  • 16th Century Medieval Village
  • Labyrinth of Pedestrian Friendly Streets
  • Vibrant Markets
  • Sublime Views from the ‘Chateau’
  • Galleries & Boutiques
  • Bars & Bistrots

Old Town

A medieval village dating back to the 16th century, the Old Town (or Vieux Nice as it’s known to the Niçois) is undoubtedly the most colourful and vibrant ‘Quartier’ in Nice and a great place to rent a Sunlight Properties holiday apartment. Throw away the map and lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets brimming with Provençal arts and crafts, galleries, bars, boulangeries, bistros, boucheries, and the local characters who live there. Rent a holiday apartment in the Old Town for a week or two, and live like a true Niçois. You may see Nadim, who always wears a smile and braces, peddling off to the local market to buy fresh ingredients for his famous restaurant Oliviera; or Suzy with her bright red lipstick at Chez Thereza on the Cours Saleya serving up Socca (a delicious and obligatory Nice specialty); or ‘Dolly’ dressed in one of his many ‘old time’ outfits: one day a detective, the next a priest!

The beach and tram stops are a short walk from any point in the Old Town, making it an ideal location for your holiday rental apartment in Nice. The myriad of restaurants, bars, and brasseries; combined with the car free environment, creates a lively atmosphere - day or night. Amongst the ice cream parlours and bistros in Place Rossetti (one of the main squares) is the beautiful Cathédrale de St. Réparate. One of many churches in the Old Town, so many in fact you will stumble across another at each turn; their bells tolling in a seemingly random manner, at least not conforming to any time scale that can be easily discerned – except perhaps South of France time.

Palais Lascaris, a 17th century home and now a museum is open to the public and definitely worth a visit for its beautiful frescos. Continue North on the gallery filled rue Droite, and you will come to Place St. François, site of the former town hall dating from the 17th century, as well as a campanile from a former Franciscan monastery. Proceed onto rue Pairolière, to discover an eclectic collection of spices, liqueurs, soaps, butchers, fromageries. . . Rue Pairolière will take you to the recently renovated Place Garibaldi – take a good look at the buildings that surround the square. The skilled artisans who worked on these created grand masonry facades – take a closer look and what is revealed is an optical illusion.

The ‘Colline du Chateau’ rising up on the Eastern side of Vieux Nice is the former site of a fortified castle demolished in 1706 – it is now a peaceful haven, transformed into a pleasant tree filled park, replete with an impressive waterfall. If you choose a holiday rental apartment in Vieux Nice, you can make a hike to the chateau part of your morning exercise routine – an effort rewarded with spectacular views over Nice, the Port, the Promenade des Anglais, the beach and bay. If you spent the previous night dancing into the small hours, don’t worry, there is a lift open daily (by the Tour Bellanda, on Quai des Etats Unis) available to whisk you to the summit.

The busiest part of Vieux Nice lies to the South along the Cours Saleya, where Tuesday through Sunday mornings, a feast for all the senses awaits to tempt you – flowers, fruits, vegetables, freshly baked bread, French desserts and more. Fill up your Provençal basket with goodies to take home to your rental holiday home and whip up a tasty meal. On Mondays food and produce give way to an antique and bric-a-brac market selling a vast arrange of ‘treasures’. A great opportunity to buy gifts for family and friends – or even better, for yourself! After a hard morning’s shopping take a seat at one of the many cafes surrounding the market, and participate in some people watching - the shoppers represent a veritable mini UN – people from all over the world on the hunt for a bargain. And don’t forget to do just that, dust off your negotiating skills and grab yourself a great buy. On neighbouring Place du Palais there’s a book market on Saturdays. Towards the seafront, the Opera de Nice is situated in a lovely belle époque building. Tickets to concerts, operas and ballets are all extremely reasonable and we would encourage you to catch a performance during your holiday, to satiate your cultural desires. There is truly something for everyone in Vieux Nice!

  • Beautiful Views
  • Coastal Walks
  • Quiet & Luxurious

Boron

The area of Mont Boron and Cap de Nice is luxuriously verdant and blessed with a spectacular coastline, incredible views, exquisite villas and up-market apartments. This is the premium area in Nice, sought after by bankers and celebrities alike. It is lovely and quiet, yet still so close to the Centre of Nice. Some of the most famous historical villas of the Côte d’Azur can be found here.

The more working class area of the Port is immediately to the West of Mt. Boron and Cap de Nice and therefore within easy walking distance, as is of course the beach. Mt Boron sits behind Cap de Nice and is dotted with luxurious villas enjoying fabulous views over the Côte d’Azur (this is where Elton John lives when he’s in town). On the crest of the hill can be seen the menacing Fort Alban, fun for the kids and great for panoramic photos of the French Riviera. At the base of the Western side of Mt. Boron is the fascinating prehistoric museum Musee Terra Amata – another great ‘port of call’ for the kids. Many of the Sunlight Properties villa holiday rentals in this location enjoy private gardens; and what’s more a number of our holiday apartments to let are waterfront with balconies from which you too can enjoy the multi-million dollar views.

The bus station, the tram, and the Riquier Train Station are a 20 - 25 minute walk and the number 100 bus stops every 15 minutes at the bus stops located along the ‘Basse Corniche’ road which runs through this area, and for €1 will take you to Villefranche Sur Mer, Beaulieu, Monaco and all the way to Menton on the Italian border. So should you rent one of our holiday properties in the Mt. Boron & Cap de Nice quarter you will have the advantage of peace and quiet yet still be able to access public transport.

There are some marvelous walks to be had from boulevard Franck Pilatte and along the stunning rocky coastline of Cape de Nice. While they do their best to keep this special spot a secret, this is where the locals come to sunbath and swim – a secret you can share in when you choose to base your holiday in this unique part of Nice.

Since Mt. Boron and Cap de Nice are quiet residential areas, shops, restaurants, and bars are fairly limited however the adjacent Port area has an abundance of such spots. Click here: Port Area for more ideas on where to shop, eat, and drink when renting a holiday apartment or villa in Mt. Boron & Cap de Nice.

Port

Meander around the beautiful Port of Nice and see how the other half lives: sipping glasses of champagne on the sterns of their €50 million yachts; walk a little further and you will see how the ‘other’, other half lives: the local Niçois enjoying a ‘Pastis’ or three on the decks of their colourful fishing boats. This juxtaposition is what makes the Port such an interesting place to rent a Sunlight Properties holiday apartment. The candy coloured buildings that surround the Port include some fine examples of ‘Genoan’ architecture with their hallmark arches. At the base of these buildings can be found numerous bistrots and bars and excellent spots to sit by the water with an aperitif in hand – hey, if everyone else is doing it!

The Chateau Park and Old Town are immediately to the West of the Port and therefore within easy walking distance, as is of course the beach. To the East of the Port is >Mt. Boron and Cap de Nice dotted with luxurious villas enjoying fabulous views over the Côte d’Azur (this is where Elton John lives when he’s in town). On the crest of the hill can be seen the menacing Fort Alban, fun for the kids and great for panoramic photos of the French Riviera. To the Northeast of the Port is the fascinating prehistoric museum Musee Terra Amata – another great ‘port of call’ for the kids. All of our holiday rental apartments in the Port are located close to boulangeries and corner stores; and what’s more many are waterfront with balconies from which you too can enjoy the multi-million dollar views.

The bus station, tram, and Riquier Train Station are a short stroll away and the number 100 bus stops every 15 minutes at the Port and for €1 will take you to Villefranche Sur Mer, Beaulieu, Monaco and all the way to Menton on the Italian border. What’s more a second East to West tramline is under construction, which when completed will link the airport and the Port area. So should you rent one of our holiday properties in the Port area you will certainly be well connected, and if you choose to arrive by car then this is one of the easiest areas in Nice to find parking.

The Antiques Quartier can be found just off quai Papacino (in the Northwest corner of the Port) along rue Catherine Segurane and the surrounding streets. This little area boasts a huge concentration of antique shops from high end to flea markets, and everything in between. Here is also situated the recently renovated and spectacular Place Garibaldi – take a good look at the buildings that surround the square. The skilled artisans who worked on these created grand masonry facades – take a closer look and what is revealed is an optical illusion.

To the North of the Port is the recently restored rue Bonaparte; this area has attracted some quirky bars, shops and restaurants. There are some marvelous walks to be had around the port to the adjacent Cape de Nice and along the stunning rocky coastline. While they do their best to keep this special spot a secret, this is where the locals come to sunbath and swim – a secret you can share in when you choose to let a holiday apartment from Sunlight Properties in this unique part of Nice.
